Amazon and Walmart have continued expansion in Franklin and Cumberland counties in South Central Pennsylvania. I have written on numerous occasions regarding the distribution center/warehouse growth along the Interstate 81 corridor in South Central Pennsylvania. Amazon and Walmart have been part of that accelerated growth.
In 2023, we have seen two new Walmart Distribution Centers open in Greencastle and Shippensburg right off Interstate 81 exits (Exit 3 and Exit 24). These distribution centers are massive. The Walmart Shippensburg distribution center is to employ more than 600 employees. Greencastle Walmart distribution center will employ over 1000 employees. These are big numbers for geographic areas already pressed in the labor market and housing availability.
In 2023, the area also saw growth from Walmart competitor Amazon Distribution. Amazon opened a new distribution center in Shippensburg off Exit 24, right beside the new Walmart distribution center. You can’t miss them if you are driving on Interstate 81. The new Shippensburg Amazon adds to their footprint in Central Pennsylvania, joining Carlisle, York, Lewisberry, Mechanicsburg, and Harrisburg.
Together, these two companies are adding to the labor market from Greencastle to Chambersburg to Shippensburg to Carlisle. The difficult part will be finding labor. Franklin County posted a 2.7% unemployment rate in October 2023 while Cumberland County posted a 2.6% unemployment rate. Those are very low numbers. Traditionally, distribution and warehouse jobs are high on the list for work-related injuries. They involve heavy labor, fast paced work, and repetitive activities. We also see a pretty good share of slip and falls and forklift injuries in the warehouse industry. Our hope is that Walmart and Amazon make a commitment and investment in training employees on the physical nature of the jobs and in operation of mechanical equipment, such as forklifts and pallet jacks. I hear too much about lack of training, pressure in achieving productivity goals, or lack of supervision on the floor. These all lead to increased work injuries.
